How to Become a Special Education Teacher in New Jersey

BCASE certification is one of the most powerful credentials a New Jersey educator can earn, and the stakes have never been higher. New Jersey serves 18% of public school students under IDEA, well above the national average of 13%, across 603 districts staffed by over 15,500 dedicated teachers in this field. Ranked the #1 state for education by U.S. News & World Report, New Jersey sets a high bar, and its educators deserve credentials that match.

To earn your New Jersey teaching certificate with a special education endorsement, you must meet requirements set by the NJ Department of Education (NJDOE):

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Complete an NJDOE-approved educator preparation program
  • Pass the Praxis Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications exam
  • Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) or Certificate of Eligibility (CE)
  • Once employed, your district requests a two-year Provisional Certificate with mentoring and evaluation
  • Advance to a permanent Standard Certificate after completing the Provisional Teacher Program

New Jersey’s Standard Certificate is permanent and requires no renewal, a unique advantage that lets educators focus on growth, not paperwork.

Continuing Education & License Renewal in New Jersey

While New Jersey’s Standard Certificate doesn’t expire, teachers must complete a minimum of 20 professional development hours (PDHs) per year through an individual Professional Development Plan (PDP) developed with their supervisor.

NASET is not yet a state-level approved provider in New Jersey, the NJDOE does not maintain a vendor list. Approval is handled at the district level. Submit NASET course information to your coordinator using AUN# 300003228 or CPE# 910014 as evidence of quality.

For NJ educators, earning a BCASE credential through NASET is one of the most impactful ways to fulfill PDH requirements while building a nationally recognized board certification.

IEPs in New Jersey

New Jersey follows all federal IDEA requirements through the NJDOE Office of Special Education Programs, with several important state-specific provisions:

  • Every eligible student must have an IEP developed by a Child Study Team (CST) — a uniquely New Jersey model including a school psychologist, learning disabilities teacher-consultant (LDTC), and social worker
  • IEPs must be reviewed annually, with reevaluations at least every three years
  • Transition planning begins at age 14 — earlier than the federal standard of 16
  • NJ parents hold extensive procedural safeguard rights under both IDEA and NJ state law
